The SDGs, or the Global Goals, were adopted by all UN Member States in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. Achieving the SDGs requires the partnership of governments, private sector, civil society and citizens alike to make sure we leave a better planet for future generations.
In the recent publication of the UN Global Compact Progress report 2019, we see that despite the excitement and commitments in response to the powerful and interdependent masterplans, an analysis of progress four years on finds that the world has collectively fallen short. Now, to deliver on this extraordinary opportunity to promote peace and prosperity on a healthy planet, efforts from all stakeholders must be exponentially intensified. There is also a clear role for businesses.
As Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General, says “Business is a vital partner in achieving the SDGs. Companies can contribute through their core activities, and we ask companies everywhere to assess their impact, set ambitious goals and communicate transparently about the results.” The SDG’s are very relevant for businesses as they help to identify future business opportunities, enhance the value of corporate sustainability, strengthen stakeholder relations & keeping the pace with policy developments, stabilize society & markets, and ensure a common language & shared purpose is used.
